Purple Waves of Merino

Well, that's sort of what I had in mind.

Cotton crochet thread, meet merino.

Molly, meet cotton crochet thread.

Looser than I meant it to be, so I have to try again. I was just curious how it would work out. It's a bit trickier than I thought, plying something thick with something thin!

Here is a sweater sleeve ... inching along, I am.

Oh, and a new thing. An experiment. An adult-sized slipper that I'm going to attempt to felt. It's Bernat wool roving. The top is too big, but we'll see what happens.

I was at Joanne's this past weekend, looking for the roving to make the slipper. I picked up some nice roving, not the stuff above (I can't remember the name of it) and I was almost to the register when I happened to look down at the label.

It was 80% acrylic. Some company had the nerve to produce acrylic roving. I stomped around the yarn section for a while, found some proper roving -- 100% wool -- and purchased that.

Acrylic roving! The nerve!

  2. The purple is very pretty!

I shudder at the thought of acrylic roving. I suppose they have it, right before making acrylic yarn, but ick. But then again, spinning is gaining popularity and acrylic is cheap. I bet someone is buying it.

  3. Acrylic roving - that just sounds so very wrong!

I love the way the purple yarn looks - so wavy and pretty. Great idea to ply with the thread, even if the first attempt wasn't perfect ;)

  4. I didn't even realize that Joanns sold roving. I don't think ours does. Yes, acrylic is nasty! I like how your handspun turned out. I need to get some thread to experiment with that. I really like the Lopey yarn. I hope I spelled that right. Good luck with the felting.

  5. You may soon be very happy with the top of the slipper being that large!
Sometimes, that additional margin is all that enables you to actually 'get the darned thing over your foot' after felting!! :) XXO-

  7. I smiled at the nerve of acrylic roving! The cotton and wool is cool; like the weight of it. It would make a great shopping bag!

  9. Your yarn turned out nicely. I've used a bamboo crochet thread that works great too.

    Acrylic roving....Yikes!

  10. I visit Michael's from time to time, and it's amazing what they consider as "yarn" these days. I saw something suitable as nylon rope, in the yarn section!

    Go brown sweater, go!

  11. Have just tried spinning thin cotton with merino too and discovered the difference. Great effect though!

  12. Ok, maybe I missed your mentioning it a while back but those truly do look like pineapples in those cables...genius! Good luck with the felting, it's such a fun process to me. I enjoy quickly knitting up coasters and felting them by hand...makes it seem so magical when you can actually feel it felting. Thank you so much for your nice comment on my big sweater. Have a wonderful weekend.
